Today I went to the first rehearsal for the district band. It was great! I rehearsed in a band of more than 100 people, all being some of the top musicians in the district :)
I'm stuck on 3rd trumpet (for any non musicians, this is usually the lowest level of music, above me are the 2nd and 1st trumpets) but it's kind of nice. The music is easier, I can be at my peak instead of always being tired out by first music.
We rehearsed for 7 hours, 9am-4pm; with short breaks every hour or so, and a break for lunch. We're only playing 3 pieces! Next Saturday we'll be going through the same three pieces from 9am-4pm, then play them at a performance sometime after 4pm. All the other ensembles will be playing the same night at the same concert, but I won't get to see any of them because they 'lock us in the basement' till it's our turn to perform |:(
It has been so bitter cold. When we walked from the van to the college my fingers started to freeze. It was extremely dumb to go out without gloves! About 5 minutes after getting into the building my left fingers started to throb really bad. I don't remember ever getting them that cold before. It was a few minutes before they were warm enough to play with. Sometimes this New England weather just goes too far! It's 2.5 degrees as I type (a real heat wave, compared to last night!!!!).
Thursday night I had forgotten to practice during the day, and when I remembered I was already in bed. Being the trumpet addict I am, I got out my trumpet, put in my practice mute (it almost completely silences the sound) and practiced for 20 minutes or so. Nothing like closing your eyes and visualizing what slurs/scales/long tones look like. heh.
Well that's all for now, I can't wait to be able to chat 'full time' on Sunday night. If you want to catch me, I'm almost 100% sure to be on sometime in the evening tomorrow.
