I called someone ma'am the other day and she said she would rather be called sir, due to the origins of the word ma'am. Well if you are going to object to ma'am, you would have to also object to "my lady", or "Madam". Ma'am is not an original word itself, it (according to the source below) is a contraction of Madam.
